Ho ho ho

Drupal is magic.

Custom links now works.

Protected files download now works.

I’m uploading World of Warcraft’s patches again. They’ll be up in a few hours and only accessible to registered members of the site. This isn’t because I want more hits and readers (as explained below) but just because direct links are unmanageable and I cannot waste 140Gb of bandwidth in a day.

To access them just search on the sidebar, below the “categories” section. I’ll edit this post when the files are up.

EDIT 1: I had a few problems with the upload module. Drupal wants me to upload the files through the web browser, which is insane. I found a partial workaround by uploading a file at 0Kb and then hack directly with mySQL to give it the correct dimension and upload the real file directly with the FTP.

Anyway. Tomorrow the patches should be up.

EDIT 2: Both files are up and ready. Only for registered users logged in.

6.20AM EST – Currently there’s still a queue on Blackrock, the most popular PvP server in World of Warcraft. This means more than 3200 players logged in just on that server and more waiting in queue.

Right now in DAoC, the total of all the players logged in the 18 servers is 6040.

My warrior on Mannoroth dinged 34. I killed some ogres to then discover that (at level 33) I can kill more easily the level 36 ogres than the level 34. Why? because the level 36 ogres dodge my swing a lot more and that triggers the most powerful syle I’ve available. The more they dodge the more I hurt them. Fun. (expect nerf soon)

Yesterday my free month + bonus days were over. My credit card got charged, the account works. I’m not Australian but they didn’t notice. Good.

I’ve resubscribed two days ago to Eve-Online and I’m impressed. They worked a lot on every part of it and it’s in a considerable better status now (but the game is still the same, beware). I’ll probably have more to say about it soon. The strange part is that I’m currently more hooked by Eve than WoW. Despite Eve doesn’t really appeal me in its focus.

Still, it’s bugged as hell.

Thanks a lot

Well, thanks to Canaca, the company hosting this site. When I subscribed the silver plan, in May, it gave to me 10Gb of hard disk space and 40Gb of monthly traffic. The offer got updated with the months and when I asked them if I could use the new possibilities they upgraded my account for free in just a few hours.

With the last upgrade I was allowed for 80Gb of traffic, monthly. My site in general doesn’t use more than 3Gb so it was way, way more than what I needed, tons of space and bandwith just in case. At least till the other day, when I got linked somewhere and more than 12.000 peoples tried to download one of the patches for WoW I had uploaded. And not even the last that I linked recently on Q23, but the old one, at 20Mb.

When I checked my e-mail I found that the monthly traffic was exceeded by ‘just’ 80Gb, for a total of more than 140Gb. In a single day. Fun.

So now I have to thank Canaca for the optimal service, they upgraded my silver plan to offer 20Gb of hard disk space and 400Gb of traffic. After seeing my site going nut I asked them if I could benefit of the upgrade for free, like they did the last time I asked. And a few hours later I find my account fully updated back within the traffic limit and about 250Gb to use just in case.

Thank you a lot.

What happens now? I may re-upload the patches but I need to figure out a way so that the files can be accessed only from this site, disabling direct links. And not because I want to use those patches as an excuse to get more hits. I really don’t care about getting more readers. When I started to mirror the patches it wasn’t because I wanted to become Fileplanet or because I wanted to become more popular, but just because I wanted to offer what I can to the peoples frequenting the same message boards I do. Just being useful for something I can do. When I mirrored the patches on Q23 only a few Gb of traffic were used. Now the problem is to cut out traffic that doesn’t belong here.

EDIT: I did a small research and top referral (3000+ hits) is a goddamn chinese, korean or japanese forum …Why the fuck they need a patch for the US version of World of Warcraft? No, really.

Dear Santa Claus,

Dear Santa Claus,

I’d like to receive a broadband connection for Christmas but I know already I’ve been a bad, bad boy. So I guess I’ll have to stick with my crappy ISDN for at least another year.

God bless the technology in Italy. We are too advanced.

I’m in

I managed to get in. I finally have my own account and I feel like it’s Christmas.

As always when I start with a new mmorpg I start to dream about fancy ideas that never become concrete. For example I’d like to build a good guild instead of feeling always unsatisfied and always searching something where I can have fun and build some cooperation.

I’ve been in both small and well-known, bigger guilds but the cooperation has always been an element put aside. Sure, in every guild small groups are built where there’s a real cohesion but I’ve never seen the cooperation as the true focus. And that’s what I’d like to build. A decent guild of mature players with the focus on the cooperation, trying to have a relevant role in the PvP competition. With some ambition, I mean, goals to accomplish, but without betraying the idea that its reason to exist is about playing together to build something bigger and more compelling than a single character.

So I have made my dwarf warrior, on the East/PvP/alliance/Mannoroth server. Its name is Kadath and he has that dream to build “The Defenders” guild.

But everyone knows that I may have good ideas but without the actual ability to make them concrete.

Trying to “break” WoW’s forced servers

Posted on Grimwell and pasted here.
Note for who doesn’t know me: I’m italian and Blizzard has decided to not accept credit cards linked to foreign addresses. This is why I’m searching “workarounds” to the situation.

So, I’m a looser and I decided that it’s worth loosing money to at least try to get in. It will cost quite a bit but perhaps I’ll make through and will be able to play without waiting months. This because WoW is the only mmorpg I’m looking forward for a long, long time. So that’s it.

Gamestop was the only shop I found to ship outside the USA and in fact it worked and my box is in transit:

Nov 22, 2004
9:26 P.M. DALLAS/FT. WORTH A/P, TX, US DEPARTURE SCAN

8:03 P.M. DALLAS/FT. WORTH A/P, TX, US ORIGIN SCAN

Nov 21, 2004
6:14 P.M. BILLING INFORMATION RECEIVED

Tracking results provided by UPS: Nov 22, 2004 11:16 P.M. Eastern Time (USA)

Then I’ll see what happens and if I’ll be able to pay and play the game. The first thing I’ll try is to see if they’ll accept my credit card (you never know, perhaps they forgot to put in the block), if it doesn’t work I’ll try to cheat a bit with Paypal and see if I make through it.

If even that fails I still have a last resort. In fact I also ordered the game card box from EBgames which should ship tomorrow or by the end of this month.

This will cost me 130$ plus taxes (probably another 20-40$) for the standard box. But also considering that two months of subscription are included. I also wonder: I’ll be able to use the free month?

I expect that to use it you need to register the credit card, but then what happens for peoples using the game cards?

Anyway, it should work at least till the end of February, by then I hope to be able to pay following the normal ways. Wish me good luck :)

Bush wins

This site will mourn the loss and will be quiet for the next 24 hours.

The world has lost another significant battle.

No beta for yoo, bah..

I don’t know why but I was actually looking for an invite to DAoC’s Catacomb beta. I always applied to *every* beta they had and *never* got accepted. Not once. This time the fact that my account is canceled probably didn’t help but I was ready to reup it if I was able to “do something” and provide what I consider useful feedback.

Today they sent the second wave of invites and I cheked my mails. I was hoping to have a bit of luck this time since the beta application was up just for a weekend but it didn’t happen.

I also don’t expect to join later because I’d still need a few days to get the whole client with my ISDN connection and joining a beta for the last two weeks before release is simply useless for what I’m interested about. So I guess I’m giving up (aww, poor betrayed fanboy).

I don’t know why but I have the impression that they carefully handpick my applications and deliberately toss them away as far as possible :)
