Lost in (pirate) Comicdom

In the last few days I’ve been idle here because, beside being sick, I discovered another geek paradise. The Napster of comics.

On the internet you can really find whatever you want, if you know where to look. The problem is always about finding it. In my case I was frustrated because it’s more than a year that I keep waiting to read “Avenger disassembled” (one of the lastest Marvel crossovers). I own every single issue to this day (published over here, not the originals), “House of M” is starting and I’m still stuck to a year ago. This because I miss two issues of Thor right at the beginning of the story arc and decided to wait till I was able to get them. I’m quite picky about these things. The problem is that the crossover was published on a not so popular comic book series, over here, and I was never able to find the copies in a normal newsstand, nor from a specialized shop since they sold out and the publisher still hasn’t decided to reprint them. One year and I still have holes in the plot.

So I decided to look on the internet to see if I was able to find a place where I could read the issues I was missing and maybe even find a correct “reading order” so that I could read the whole crossover linearly. I KNEW that there was somewhere a super-organized place archiving meticulously all that was being published. It happens for everything that is vaguely part of the geek world, games, manga, anime, movies, music, pr0n. You would be amazed about how some of these places are organized through a bunch of complicated .cvs lists, directory structures, CRC checks and so on. Beside the moral and legal implications of their questionable activities, the dedication and care of the internet pirates is amazing. They create museums and encyclopedias. So often you find things you have been looking for years without success. It’s really not so much about getting stuff illegally to avoid paying it, but more about an *opportunity* to experience things that you wouldn’t have otherwise. It’s similar to the feeling I was having as a kid when I was riding on my bike for two hours during the summer to reach a city nearby and pass another couple of hours in a book shop finding sci-fi and fantasy books (Van Vogt, E. E. Doc Smith, Heinlein, Moorcock and, of course, Lovecraft were some of my favourite authors). A discovery, a world disclosed. The money is just the opportunity but the world you are interested about is elsewhere. The money is a barrier between you and that world. We aren’t interested in the money, or to spend. The consumer mentality isn’t the one of those who have interests and passions, but in the one of those who rise barriers in the culture. We are naturally meant to share experiences and to communicate. If I draw a comic I would ideally like it to be read by as many people as possible, and not have an high cost so that only a small group has access to it. This is the mentality of the internet pirates.

Of course it doesn’t work. It’s a silly utopia. If I’m an author I need my stories to sell or I wouldn’t able to get what I need to continue to create them. If the pirates distribute my stories freely they steal my work and kill what I do. They kill me and my possibility to continue to communicate. It’s kind of obvious that this model is wicked because it gets legitimation from a system that inhibits the original purposes. I’m here to communicate, but the only way to communicate is to create a barrier around what I do, so that only a limited number of people can have access to it. It sucks! I know it’s inacceptable and I know that this world was designed by an idiot. But things work like that and our very reality is based on compromises.

The internet, as in other cases, brings up some basic contradictions of our real world. It happened with the music. You cannot stop people to hear and enjoy the music. It’s a *perverse idea* to pretend to transform the music into a commercial product. The music is meant to be heard by the largest number of people. The music shatters paradigms, it shatters barriers, overthrows governments, it changes the world. You cannot confine it. You cannot create borders, lines of separation, barriers. The music is meant to cross them. It’s its very nature. Nothing does that better than music. An artist ought to know this, but at the same time he cannot comply with his principles and the principles of what he does, because our real world imposes a value, a price on everything. A quantification of everything. A silly idea of the private property, even if everyone was born on this world and should have the right to walk everywhere.

These are all contradictions and we are all victims in a way or another. Our practical compromises want everyone to conform and comply, with the contradictions and everything. There aren’t real answers. But we know that we all have inclinations that aren’t exactly going in the same direction this world is. And so we’ll keep dragging behind us those contradictions. We ought to love our world, even if it sucks.

So I was looking for those two numbers of Thor. It’s wasn’t a problem of money. If I read something I want to sit on my armchair, not in front of the PC. Reading doesn’t work on a computer. It’s a year that I try to find those two friggin numbers but they are sold out and it looked like that I had to start reading without the beginning of the story. So I started to dig the internet to see if I was able to locate one of those corners where you can find everything you ever desired. And I found it.

This time it’s not about hidden chat channels, newsgroups or torrent sites. The pirate comicdom lives through a program called Direct Connect. Here some linear instructions to step into this wonderful geek paradise who can offer more than you ever desired.

You can get the latest version of the client from here. The installation and configuration is rather straightforward. This type of peer2peer is based on themed hubs/chatrooms where the users share their hard-disk directories. The most important step is to find the right hub and be able to access it.

These hubs usually have three requirements that you have to satisfy if you want to enter them and stay. The first is about sharing a minimum amount of content before you join the room. It can go from zero to 15 Gigabytes, so the real problem is about having already something to share before you can become a cog of this machine. The second requirement is about sharing content appropriate for the hub. So if you share 5Gb of pr0n and the room is about sharing music you risk to be kicked out as soon as someone spots you. The third requirement is the simpler one and is just about opening enough upload slots on your client. The more hubs you join at the same time the more slots you have to open, which is not recommended since one hub has more than enough stuff to keep you occupied for months. You can increase the number of slot from the “file” – “setting” – “sharing” screen.

To find a good hub and start this journey you go to this site. Here you can search for the public hubs available. In this case we are looking for comics so you type “comics” in the search field on the right and press the button. The list you’ll get is a good place to start, but remember that you need to meet the requirements. Here I’m on a ISDN connection, which is barely better than a modem. If I was able to lurk and get enough stuff to meet those requirements I think everyone can.

The best hub for sharing comics seems to be megaman.gotdns.com – if you cannot connect at all it means it is down (it was yesterday for a full day). If you can connect but cannot manage to enter it, the error message should give you enough hints about why you cannot get in (not enough slots open, not sharing enough content). The requirements for this hub are 5Gb of comics or “cartoons”. You can then read in the detail the rules when you join.

If you don’t have those 5Gb you could find other rooms who have lower requirements. Another very good one is comicshack.no-ip.info which wants you to share 2Gb. And the one with the smaller requirements I could find is thewatchtower.no-ip.info:1411 – which requires only 1Gb but that is also much smaller. The idea is that you start to grind the treadmill so that you can get access to the better hubs. At the beginning I didn’t have enough “on topic” content, but you can easily gain some time by sharing other stuff and hope you don’t get reported. I know it worked for me :) Other options could be about getting initial content from torrents or newsgroups.

When you are in the hub you can start browsing the legendary library of Alexandria. Whatever has been published is probably available in a way or another. Old, new, it doesn’t matter. You can find everything, it’s amazing. If you know already what you are looking for you can just use the search function. For example if you want the issue 80 of Thor (one of the two I needed) you just type “Thor 80” in the search box. The client will start looking for all the users in the hubs where you are connected with that issue. The great majority of the files are in a .cpr format. This is something like a faked format, you can manually change the extension of these files to .rar or .zip and unpack them. Or use a particular program. Inside there are just simple .jpg files. In my case I just unpack them somewhere else and use an old version of ACDSee. An issue of 24 pages is usually around 10Mb or so. Quite agile even with a not so fast connection.

When you have the list of the files you can order it by size so that you can see what’s the more popular format and get it. Sometimes the scans have a variable quality but in general they are decent. Another good idea is to check the “slot” field on the list. If the first number is not zero it means that the user has an upload slot available, so you can start the download right away. No waiting queues. Since the sharing happens between just two users the download speeds are good.

While you download a file it is possible that the user disconnects or that you lose the connection, but the program allows you to resume the downloads. To do this you just need to go in the “download queue” window, click on the file in the queue and “search for alternate”. This system will check the CRC of the file, so even if the results have different names you can be sure it’s the same file. If the previous download was interrupted you can take it here from another user and the program will automatically resume the download on the same file. Quite simple.

The other way to find the files is about clicking on one of the users in the chat and “get file list”, this will download the full directory list with everything he is sharing at the moment and here you can start to explore and get some suggestions. Like entering a library and starting to browse what is exposed.

And a whole world discloses in front of you :) Things that I would never be able to find over here. Past issues of Astro City, the first issues of Grendel, Dave Sim’s Cerebus, Jeff Smith’s Bone, the first mini of Longshot drawn by Arthur Adams that I lost so many years ago, the delicious Alan Moore’s “Lost Girls”, De Matteis superb (and unfortunate) “Seeker Into the Mystery” mini, Warren Ellis’ “Transmetropolitan”, Rising Stars, Grant Morrison’s “Kill Your Boyfriend” (I bought and lost this one TWICE. One lost to school friend and another to a.. uhm, girl. I simply love that comics, it inspired my adolescence) and, yes, even those two issues of Thor that I was desperately looking for a year. Finally I can start reading the crossover and I was even able to pull a complete reading list order from an user who had all of it organized :)

See, it’s all stuff that I thought I had lost forever, or that I had no hope to find. Things that aren’t being translated over here and that I don’t have the opportunity to read. Tomorrow I’m going again to a specialized shop to get some other things that I had ordered. I am not going to stop reading comics because I found a well with no end on the internet. In fact this has lighted my interest again. I think I’ll never download things that I can buy because a scan on a monitor just cannot compete with really reading. In fact it could happen that I go buy something that I initially discovered online and that I want in my hands.

Another example is the DC universe that here has been published randomly. Now I can finally dig those absurd crossovers like “Crisis on Infinite Earths”. I had never thought that I would have the possibility to read it. Here I discovered crazy reading orders that group more than 700 issues. From the original crossover to Identity Crisis and Infinite Crisis. These comics don’t arrive here and for sure I would have never had the possibility to read them and all those tie-ins. Money or not, it just wouldn’t have happened.

I don’t know how many of those “pirates” that share up to 500Gb of stuff are avid comics readers, but I suspect a lot. I suspect they are some of the most passionate fans that Marvel and DC have and that still buy real comics on real paper. Of course this is always dangerous. I was thinking about why Marvel or DC don’t support these kinds of archives directly, offering themselves directly high quality versions of those comics, for example as a service with an accessible monthly fee as it happens for mmorpgs. This wouldn’t become a way to make a lot of money, but it surely would extend the reading public and would also give more life to old comics that are still worth reading but that everyone ignores. The archive is bottomless, it’s sad that all that stuff doesn’t get read anymore.

I guess this doesn’t happen because nothing stops a pirate to take even that material and made it available to everyone else for free. That would be a real piracy. Not anymore about sharing a passion and let people read things that would be ignored or forgotten otherwise, but just stealing to avoid to pay even a small fee. Again the ideals don’t work really well and we are left to lurk in the illegality to nourish a passion.

Placeholder!

I started writing a lengthy post to explain more in detail some ideas that I consider particularly important and dear to me but now I’m rather tired and I don’t have the strength to edit it in a final state.

As a teaser I’ll say that it is about the “endgame”. What it is, why we have a word to define it, what is its design purpose and role. How to solve radically the problems it presents. Then ideas and comments on the raid content and one important reason about why WoW’s PvE is still much more “powerful” and successful compared to EQ2, even if it gets old rather quickly.

You can do your homework and answer those questions on your own :)

I started writing after reading on Nerfbat “The Future of the Endgame”. He wrote from a general point of view. I’ll do what he cannot do and go in the concrete details. And solutions.

The site may be unavailable

cesspit.net domain expires in a few days and I’m trying to transfer it to dreamhost so that I don’t have to pay 20$ for the renewal where it is at the moment.

In theory the transition should be smooth since the nameservers are already at dreamhost and don’t need to be updated. But then I’m also used to all sort of problems coming up. So if the site vanishes it’s because I’m having problems with the domain. Most likely.

P.S.
While I was poking things around I reworked the code of the “Category” block so that it takes less space and allows me to create more categories for the specific games, now shown through the button toggle. I also found a workaround to hide some categories from the block so that now I can add more topics without making the block take too much space and becoming unusable.

The website is having issues

I don’t know why but it’s not because of me.

In the last couple of days there are moments when the website doesn’t respond. E-mail, ftp and shell oddly work. Only the webserver seems to take vacations.

Doomsday

Election day in Italy. In fifteen minutes the firsts exit polls will be released.

I hope it isn’t the definitive suicide of a nation and I hope it isn’t a draw.

Likely to what happened with the preemptive victory of Kerry, then turned into a victory of Bush, Berlusconi wins for a couple of votes.

Where is the button I have to press for the autodestruction? I don’t want to be here. I’m serious.

I don’t fucking want to be italian.

OBEY THE MONKEY

EDIT:
Ok, I just wake up. After being awake for 30+ hours following that thing I slept for nine hours straight. Now I dread to turn on the TV. I really fear what could happen because the situation is worse than the worst scenario.

For a brief summary. I think everyone has an idea of who is Berlusconi, it’s not so simple to frame him because it is actually true that the perception of what he is, is distorted both here and outside italy but what is sure is that HE IS an anomaly. But an italian anomaly that also closely represent what the italy has been for many, many, many years. Berlusconi is both the product and the origin of this italy and some of the “qualities” has always been of these people, since Mussolini. Self-interest, demagogy, conformism.

What is true is that this italy DESERVES Berlusconi and Berlusconi REPRESENTS this italy. Everyone knows that he is an extremely wealthy entrepreneur who already owns most of televisions, publishing, insurances and so on. What isn’t under his direct control is under the control of his sons. But what people don’t understand is that Berlusconi is sincere. He is truly convinced that doing his own interest he is able to do the interest of all people and make everyone happy. He leads this nation exactly as he would lead one of his enterprises. There is just no difference for him.

He has this absurd convinction that his self-interest must be also the interest of everyone else. And he feels on a holy mission to lead this nation because he is so completely self-absorbed that he really thinks that without him the world couldn’t continue and there is no viable alternative if not the disrepair.

He went from the economic world to the politics because of this egocentric vision of reality. Because of this distorted and hallucinated version of reality. He developed a sense of persecution and he sees everywhere conspiracies against him and attempts to sabotate his “regime”. His electoral campaign (obviously on TV) has been all about evocating fears of communists conspiracies taking over. Now the point is that Berlusconi is also considered as a liar who uses his power on the media to influence the masses, but this isn’t true. Berlusconi isn’t a liar, he is truly convinced of this reality. And he feels like a prophet, a paladin, the only hope for this nation.

We are in the hands of a fool, this is the anomaly. It’s quite obvious that here there isn’t ONE INCH of political value or depth. This is just the distorted, ill vision of a mind with a sense of onnipotence. His politics is about convincing people as he would sell you any other commercial good and from this point of view he has a wonderful power because he is naturally able to break through the passive, grave, boring screen of the “politics” to reach the people more directly, with a common language and very simple ideas that really have no concrete sense (demagogy) but that still have the appeal. When you see him, from a side you are amused, and from the other you are in anguish. Because we are going straight to hell, this nation is moving toward a complete collapse, lead by an hallucinated mind who overthrew the rules of the politics to transform the reality exactly to mirror his hallucination.

There are many doubts about how Berlusconi achieved his power. He was able to gather an insane amount of money and built his economic empire just too quickly, from one day to the other. There are suspects that the source of this money was illegal and coming from the “mafia”, but today it doesn’t really matter anymore. Trying to sabotate what he is doing now with those accusations is only an attempt to build a time machine to go back in time and prevent all this to happen. And it’s not a valid solution. The truth here is that italy has no hope to free itself from Berlusconi. He is a parasite that cannot be removed anymore. The truth is that, today, italy is Berlusconi. Italy become his image.

What happened yesterday:
Yesterday was election day after five years of his disastrous government. We came out of an electoral campaign that went over the line too many times (offences and arrogance were the norm). I was confident in the other side and I thought there were the premise to bring change here in italy. This isn’t a case like in America where I could vote Kerry just so that Bush could go away. No, I was truly confident in the other side. I thought there were valid principles and the premises to finally move out of this delirium. I was counting on this. I was counting on a plebiscite. I was counting, hoping in the democracy. At least after five years of a government that is destroying italy piece by piece.

Now, to explain things roughly, in italy the executive power is of the whole parliament so Berlusconi is only the “frontman” and doesn’t have so many executive powers on his own. We have two “parliaments” (camera and senato). A law basically bounces back between the two till it is approved by both. So we need the same “majority” in both so that a government can exist and approve the laws. The basic difference between these two parliaments is that one is voted by people slightly older.

We expected to have the final results of the elections around the 21 PM, yesterday. I went to sleep at 4 AM in the morning and we still didn’t know exactly what happened. But this is italy and things never work here.

The side against Berlusconi had an advantage over him of about 4-5% for many months before the election day in the surveys. Yes, I was hoping on this. Yesterday, at 15 PM, we got the first “exit polls”, just after the voting was complete, and these confirmed the advantage of 5%. Then the true data started to arrive, absurdly slowly. Also this data gave a huge gap in favor of the side against Berlusconi but this data wasn’t homogeneous (since some regions here vote more for a side or the other, as in the USA) and as the hours passed this gap became increasingly thin. Till around 22 PM when the margin became so thin that all the statistics institutes “gave up” because there was no way to figure out who was going to win.

The biggest fear was a “draw”. Because if we have two different winners at the two parliaments, there is no “governability” and we must go back to redo all the elections. Italy right now isn’t in a good position to go through all this all over again. We cannot afford it.

So we went through all the afternoon where the side aganist Berlusconi was convinced to finally have won, and by a considerable margin. There was a public announce to be made around 18:30 PM and people were ready to party. There was something to celebrate. It was a success. But the data started to slow down, progressively. Till it crawled. Till it barely moved. The more the time passed the more the advantage grew thinner and the victory, from certain, to in doubt. That public announce in the afternoon was delayed hour by hour. Till 3 AM in the fucking morning. And we still had to receive the final data.

We assisted to some sort of nightmare and what happened after was pathetic at best. At 3:30AM in the morning it was finally certain that the side going against Berlusconi was going to win one of the two parliaments by just 20.000 votes, while the other was still uncertain. With the possibility to win for them even there, but where Berlusconi got more than 50% of the votes.

The debacle was complete. Despite all this, the representants of this side came out and made the public announce (awaited for the afternoon) that they “won the election”. When it was not even completely true. When the situation coming out was DRAMATIC, prospecting the impossibility to govern. It was an utter failure and still they came out declaring they “had won”. It looked pathetic, depressing. The truth is that the scenario of this “victory” is worse than the worst. It was a complete failure, Berlusconi was able to recuperate the 5% gap of disadvantage, against all the expectations. We just cannot free ourselves of him.

At 3:30 AM, while this side was declaring a false, inconsistent victory, Berlusconi sent out the announce that he was disproving this victory and that he would ask a recount of the votes from the beginning. I went to bed with an italy broken in half, with no clear winners and a situation of complete crisis. With Berlusconi as the moral winner and the other side announcing a victory that doesn’t exist when they should have JUST SHUT UP AND HIDE. No fucking smiles because there isn’t anything to smile about.

This was an utter failure, a defeat. Prospecting a complete ungovernability and a crisis both social and political. I went to sleep with an irreal victory and celebration from a side and a menace from the other, in angst. I wasn’t anymore recognizing myself in any of those two political sides. It’s just one single, dramatic future.

Now I fear to turn on the TV. Whoever won, the situation is dramatic.

13:50 – last edit –
We STILL don’t have all the data. It’s insane. But it’s fairly safe to assume that the side against Berlusconi can technically have the majority on both paliaments, with 20.000 votes of advantage in one and 200.000 votes of disadvantage on the other. How is this possible? Similarly to how it happened in the USA, the other parliament is voted depending on the regions, so it matters more who won the specific region more than who got more votes overall.

It’s still a defeat, from my point of view, for the reasons I explained above. It will be extremely hard to govern this nation with these premises. It’s more reassuring that is not Berlusconi to have to deal with this mess but this doesn’t change that the situation is dramatic. You can easily imagine that both sides are proclaming right now their victory since Berlusconi has techincally more votes (and, honestly, even a more compact coalition).

Summarizing: we have won, but there isn’t anything to smile about. We should have won with a huge margin and Berlusconi was able not only to recuperate all of it, but even risk a victory. There is technically the possibility to govern but the coalition is extremely fragmented and way too shaky and instable. The point is that we tried everything and then more. If this is the best scenario, I fear to imagine what is the worst.

So what? We fight and then fight more, trying to govern even with that tiny, technical advantage to try to drag italy out of the mud even if without the full, “democratic” consensus of the people or we just give up we say “fuck off” and just let italy in the hands of who it truly deserves? If it was me, I would have chosen the latter, the coalition decided for the former.

The funny thing: Berlusconi rewrote and tailored the electoral laws so that he could have a technical advantage and more possibilities of winning. What is fun is that these laws retorted against him. If the other side has now the possibility to win and govern even without a definite majority on the overall votes, it’s because of the stupid changes he made on those laws.

April Fools

So.

Lum left Mythic to become a designer, Shadowbane is free, Wolfpack is closing down, Raph left SOE, Bioware is working on a mmorpg and Oblivion is super-cool.

And I don’t think we’re done yet.

V for Vendetta, deluding

After all the positive reviews I was expecting to go see a great movie, instead it is only “passable”. I’m not surprised that Alan Moore didn’t like it.

There are two parts that didn’t work, the “humanization” of V and the whole screenplay.

The screenplay was absolutely crap. I really didn’t understand why it was messed up, the original story is already prefectly cinematographic, with a perfect mood. The changes just don’t make any sense if not to manipulate the story to make it much less believable and solid. Just as an example at the very beginning, Evey originally approached the guard to offer for sex and get some money. She starts as a quite desperate character trying to survive in that world, she was hopeless and lost. In the movie the whole situation is stereotyped to the point that it loses all its strength and feels rather cheap. The guards approach Evey and menace her directly. It becomes the usual “damsel in distress” with the baddies around her, just waiting for the superhero to arrive and save her. How utterly predictable.

All the fine sophistication of the original story is lost in a second to never to be found again in the whole movie. V, one of the most fascinating characters ever created, becomes just an anarchic, politicized version of Spider-Man, or Spawn, or Batman. Or all of them stacked up together. And here starts the usually hollywood action movie. Finely crafted, sure, but nowadays feeling like an unnecessary cut and paste from every other movie.

V is humanized through the ridicule of the character. The sarcasm here looks so absolutely out of place and I felt as watching a parody of “Scary Movie”. Switch the masks and they feel exactly the same. Why there was the need to completely remove the inscrutability to transform the whole thing into another improbable love story?

The rest of the movie is acceptable but everything is so constantly bloated and pushed to the excess that the whole “message” of the movie is kind of lost. Exploited. It is just doesn’t work and makes that world feel so much distant from our own, faked. Failing to make us think and get the analogies, the symbolic value.

The original story was set in a precise moment, but Alan Moore made the mood feel somewhat “out of time”, anachronistic. Which helped to make the message feel actual and not dependent on a geographic location and precise time. The movie completely loses the mood, it “shows” too much, it is always too explicit, too defined. Too blatant.

So I didn’t like it at all. The character was ruined, the story twisted and stereotyped, the message lost credibility and power.

It is still decent. As a movie it isn’t particularly good. It isn’t directed really well, same hollywood stuff, all the movies look exactly the same, all cloned. But the power of the story is still there, somewhere, and makes the movie worthwhile at least.

It is coarse and too close to the average superhero movie. Modernized and filled with cliches. Ready to be merchandized. A great ideal made cheap, emptied and sold off. But somewhere, it can still reach the public despite all these manipulations.

Great interpretation for the actor behind V, instead. It wasn’t easy to bring on screen a character without a face, communicating just with the movement of the head and the body language. He did really a good work.

If you are in Austin

Since Austin is the new center of the world: next thursday the Gomez will play at the South by Southwest Festival. I don’t know what it is but this band is a guarantee.

Thursday 3/16 (full band performance)
South by Southwest
www.sxsw.com
Austin, TX

Thursday, March 16 midnight
Stubb’s (801 Red River St)

This is the most awesome pure music talent on earth since The Beatles so, if you can, you shouldn’t miss to see them live. It’s something special. The only problem being that the show looks already “sold out”.

A new album is ready to be released at the beginning of May, the title is “How We Operate” and should be out for ATO Records (the Dave Matthews Band label). After some lurking on the internet I was able to find two preview songs. The quality is crappy but it’s better than nothing:

See the World
Notice

Two really charming, melodic songs. Catchy. I’m glad to see the band going back to their origin after all sort of crazy experimentation that obscured a bit the beautiful simplicity of what they can do. From two songs you really cannot have a good idea of what they can do since they cross every genre and style and master all of them equally. If you can see the live just don’t hesitate, you won’t regret it.

I still have another sample from a previous post if you are interested.

Oh, oh.. And the South by Southwest site has a preview song, one of the best, from the Out West live album (the song is “Get Myself Arrested” originally in the first and greatest album: “Bring It On”). Direct linkage. Get it because it’s awesome.
