Dark Age of Team Leaders (and friends)

With the new year also some now DAoC-bashing. This time not from me, but from another former Team Leader: linkage.

If someone remembers, Mythic’s behaviour toward the community was the main reason why I also canceled, even if on the site I’ve mostly wrote my rumbles instead of explaining the reasons behind. A bad habit I have. I explained some more from a broader point of view here.

About the link above: leaving the game and the “privileged user status” because they didn’t hand out freebies is quite hypocritical. But it is not enough to dismiss the relevant arguments:

A benefit?

Helping a company to test their game for them …. basically without getting paid. Putting time and effort into helping their software become better.

DAoC at a glance

A good general point of view about DAoC on F13:

At one point in DAOC, my guild had over 100 active members, and was one of the top 5 biggest guilds on our server. Now there are about ten semi-active members, most of whom farm ToA artifacts endlessly with buffbots. The ToA “arms race” is truly ungodly. You can get artifacts for nearly every equipment slot, and take weeks leveling each one. The true catassers might have multiple artifacts on a half-dozen high-level toons at this point.

Agreed on looking at the Battlegrounds for solutions, but I think Mythic is way behind the curve at this point. Last year’s “Frontiers” free expansion was supposed to be the great RvR revamp. Instead it drove a ton of people out of RvR, once they got over the novelty of the new gigantic keep sieges. I spent a couple weeks participating in massive ranged standoff battles, before I realized it simply was not fun. 90% of the players were just “farming realm points,” with almost no tactics or strategy involved. The other 10% were the uber-groups, who were simply more efficient at farming the sheep herd.

And, to complete, Walt admits that ToA was better if it was instanced and aimed at small groups:

If you’ll note, in the last few patches, with the exception of 1.73 – the launch of Catacombs, we’ve made numerous changes that make it easier to complete many of the ML’s.

We’ll continue the process in the future – particularly with the instancing technology that we now have. But progress will be measured in months, not days.

Yes, when they launched, in many cases they needed a zerg, and there were often bugs. Now, we have no known bugs – and we’re working on the encounters.

Mark Jacobs, goodnight

I was expecting it and it arrived. Regular every six month the letter from the boss. Last year it was about the plans for the RvR, with a consolidation of the whole team to improve the game the best possible with a full disclosure of the design to involve the community.

Obviously as for each of this letters 90% is made of demagogy, but at least demagogy with some “grasp”. I always shared the point of view and I always thought that the direction was the right one (even if the result was more then often imperfect or completely off track). This year the letter is 100% demagogy and can only repeat how good are EQ2 and WoW and how they aren’t able anymore to catch up at copying their features: instanced areas, graphic updates, visual marks for quest-giver NPC, sidekicking, non-combat pets, the rest system, the mini tasks in Catacombs and a lot more.

“Folks, here we can just copy the features and paste them as a bleached copy in our game hoping noone notices the differences.”

This time many of the brags are blatantly false:

Catacombs injected a new graphics engine that puts the game right up there or ahead of anything else on the market.

False, Catacombs is a new skin for the same game. New shapes for the same objects. This is about trivializing the graphic aspect. This is about underlining exactly what isn’t relevant to show that an argument exists when it doesn’t (indeed, demagogy). Or as I defined it: fluff. The graphic is an important part of the game but often it is trivialized as something superficial and irrelevant when, instead, it has a strong role even in the gameplay, including level design, animations, customizations, interactivity and a lot more.
Catacombs is ahead of anything else on the market only in a pointless, proofless and completely subjective point of view of someone “slightly” biased (Mythic’s president in this case). Words without facts, on within a superficial point of view trying to glide on whatever could really matter in a (sincere) judgment.

Our instanced areas and other changes have made the game easier than ever to play and succeed in than ever before.

Again copying well tested and now “safe” features from other games and again gliding on how there features are implemented in the structure of *this* game. That Camelot is an “easy” game to play makes me laugh. False again. It’s a collection of patchwork design, its ruleset doesn’t make sense and is the perfect example of something NOT intuitive. Screwing up a character is common without knowing perfectly the nearly infinite stack of rules, subrules, exceptions and bugs. It’s an amass, a collage, a swaying tower on the point to crumble because the design itself is nowhere coherent and cohesive. But this is an obvious result when all that your design team does is too copy features from other games without even considering them aside a superficial, trivial point of view. The “free level” mechanic they introduced again represents a superficial point of view. It doesn’t make the game easier to play, it just underlines a void, an absence of game. The revelation that there isn’t much to offer. It’s a vacation from the work. The game is “easier” as: it’s flat and empty. They only rendered this as an evidence. A step closer to ProgressQuest. Free levels, free money, no taxes for everyone. We are able only to smile and be happy. Come join us in the land of superficiality.
Obviously another rip-off of the rest system in World of Warcraft. Gone wrong, terribly wrong, just because they have this superficial point of view even when staring amazed (and dazed) at other, better, games. It’s better, but they cannot “get it”. Their copy is an imitation doomed to be without value.

New classes and new areas have added new depth to an already deep world.

“Deep” here is equal to “inflation”. An interesting point of view. They take the game, build new zones to render the old ones obsolete and the result is considered “deeper”. The demagogy here fails even at the eyes of a goon. A barren world filled with obsolete zones cannot be considered as “deep” even by an idiot or a first-time player. Millions of fragmented player-classes also underline once again a broken mechanic and an obstinacy to go on with admitted mistakes. Why not to create at this point ten millions of new classes, each with one type of attack? Why not add in the game 300-400 new levels and brag it as the “deeper and longer mmorpg evar”?

The same error repeated over and over. Focus on the wrong elements, messing with them more. Depth is quality, not quantity. Depth requires an attention not a superficial copy of a form. But the understanding of what’s inside the form. The source of the quality, the essence of the simple rules that make something interesting and deep. Mythic confuses complexity with complication. They see things upside down ands their “fix” just produce new problems because they didn’t address the real origin of that problem. The effort they do is good. But the approach is wrong.

And, best of all, the Catacombs launch was the cleanest launch of all time from our perspective (least downtime, fewest bugs, fewest customer support calls, etc.) we have set the standard (again) for the launch of a product.

Yes, the standard of indifference. Noone complains when noone cares. Fewest customer support calls? Yes, let’s say: fewest customers. I guess this is a winning direction. Suffocate the community with lack of feedback, lack of involvement and lack of interest.

Even Shadowbane solved most of its technical problems when most of the players stopped playing.

But what pissed me off is this part:

Enjoy your graphic update

Next Tuesday Mythic releases Catacombs. Enjoy your graphic update.

Do you think Mythic will fix the head poking through your hair during various actions?

If you are patient enough, aside the good looking screenshots, you’ll also be able to find the crap-o-the-crap: missing textures, wrong body proportions, hair looking like added with “MS Paint”, tons of polygons sinking in each other, cloaks not responding to gravity, wrong color palettes, misplaced boobs, shields floating in the void, absence of elbows and all the fantasy races now looking as b-movies with a ton of make-up.

Mythic will obviously “fix” this. With the next expansion next year.

The italian situation

I posted this on the DAoC.Catacomb site since the Vault forums are now heavily censored moderated.


The situation is more complex than how it appears. On the surface it is just another fraud story, one of those that made this country famous. The company failed and the former owner of the group is involved with lawsuits and frauds.

Basically DAoC in Italy was managed by decent-sized company called CTO. This company imported games from the USA and had a strong contract with EA to distribute directly their games. The deal made the company grow with time.

During this expansion a sub-group called CTOnet was created to focus on the online market. The first good and relevant effort has been about acquiring DAoC’s licences, localize the game and open the servers.

Things started to go “wrong” when EA decided to break the contract with the main group and obviously the whole company collapsed on itself since its structure was still strongly based on that type of business. CTO basically became an empty envelope and lawsuits with EA started (and they are still going on, I believe).

From there began a bunch of legal and less legal attempts to both save the CTOnet side and squeeze more money from the goons (both from the administrators and the players).

There’s a whole collection of lies all around. To the players, to the law, to the administrators. Not much that you would hope to “save”, it’s really so bad and dishonest that you would just hope to not hear about it again, wipe everything and restart.

Instead the whole thing keeps agonizing. The servers go on their own, without updates, without support from more than a year and half. Aside speculating on this situation and on the cheated playerbase nothing else really happened. Even when things were good the managment of the game and the relationship with the playerbase was poor, now you can imagine how the situation went to hell even starting from an already terrible status.

Unattended servers, lies to the playerbase and peoples and groups speculating on the carcass. You would hope a quick, painless death. Instead it’s going on and on, like the most awful soap-opera you can imagine. Something that, if happened in the USA, would make the news for the next five years.

All this while the players still play the full monthly fee.

I don’t know what will happen. I fled to the USA servers the week after the launch in Italy, one year before that this whole mess started.

Believe me: what happened isn’t a surprise.

In the meantime, in another country…

…DAoC hopefully dies. Yeah, in Italy.

“Hopefully” not because of something Mythic-related but because the company behind it is simply a stack of incompetence that you cannot even imagine. It’s from a year and half that the game doesn’t receive any form of update, basically blocked at the post-SI status. Well, some american players could see this as an actual paradise since it means no-ToA and no-New Frontiers but the situation remains pathetic.

With a message on the homepage they let the community know that they won’t accept anymore orders for new boxes of the game. Why? Because the peoples working in that department were fired during this summer.

The limbo goes on, there are just unattended servers with 800 or so players (regularly paying the full price) during peak time. “Communication” with the playerbase is something that in Italy doesn’t exist even in the dreams.

It’s impressive how long it takes a death by boredom.

Come on, Mythic

I’ve spotted this on the latest DAoC’s patch notes:

– Players will now see a yellow indicator under an NPC’s feet if the NPC offers a quest for the player.

Come on, Mythic. You really needed two years to realize this?
Or the mmorpg genre needed Blizzard’s awesome designers to come up with a mark for quest-givers NPCs? Woot, innovation! Revolution!
Not only it’s a shameless copy of a World of Warcraft feature, but it was also part of a long design post on DAoC I wrote one year and half ago on the Waterthread boards (rip).

Toc, toc? Anybody home?
Where’s the design team? All that is left is a cut and paste from better games? Already gave up?

No beta for yoo, bah..

I don’t know why but I was actually looking for an invite to DAoC’s Catacomb beta. I always applied to *every* beta they had and *never* got accepted. Not once. This time the fact that my account is canceled probably didn’t help but I was ready to reup it if I was able to “do something” and provide what I consider useful feedback.

Today they sent the second wave of invites and I cheked my mails. I was hoping to have a bit of luck this time since the beta application was up just for a weekend but it didn’t happen.

I also don’t expect to join later because I’d still need a few days to get the whole client with my ISDN connection and joining a beta for the last two weeks before release is simply useless for what I’m interested about. So I guess I’m giving up (aww, poor betrayed fanboy).

I don’t know why but I have the impression that they carefully handpick my applications and deliberately toss them away as far as possible :)

Indifference

I backup here a critic against Mythic I wrote on Anyuzer forums. About the role of the communication and the community.

Walter Yarbrough:
If you’ll note, we only hyped DAoC about 6 months before release.

So, expect the same thing from Imperator. Quite frankly building people to a fever pitch now is . . . . um . . . silly.

So, I should be mean and conclude that Catacombs is still more than six months from release?

You see, everything is tied. Anyuzer hasn’t a bad opinion about Mythic and it’s not just him, it’s a very common point of view. Mythic is probably the only quite successful mmorpg company that hasn’t an insane amount of hate tied with its name. It’s not something falling from above, it’s their precise and deliberate choice. And they succeeded. Mythic is the company that most used the old LtM and derivates as a springboard, just to shut everything down when the place didn’t look anymore positive for them. But what happened then?

What I suspect is that the real feeling is another: indifference.
You can check many communities about mmorpgs and you’ll always see that noone discusses DAoC (aside me, Freakazoid and a few bored Vault spammers). If it happens it’s sporadic. Another sign is that if you ask any of the passionate mmorpg players why they don’t play DAoC the answer is always the same. Exactly what Anyuzer wrote, not because the game is bad, but because of a real lack of interest.

I think that the “indifference” is possibly the worst thing that could happen to a mmorpg. It’s not about building the hype when it’s needed, it’s about bringing back some enthusiasm into the genre. And again, not in the form of pointless hype, but with something interesting and positive to say. Ideas, passion. Trying to tickle the community and use it as a positive resource. Something that should look *alive and vibrant* and not trite, old, silly and modest already on the ambition. And this happened before DAoC’s launch because of LtM.

But after that positive episode (that Mythic contributed to suffocate) Mythic started a progressive retreat that is still going on now. The latest results are the suppression of the Team Leaders and the progressive silence on the already poor Vault boards. And it is evident that the game lacks completely a community trascending the game itself. Yes, there are still guilds and the game promotes the interaction, but everything is reduced, simplified, essential. There’s no commentary, no dialogue, no interest to go on and promote the game, see it improve and grow. No passionate players. At the end of this process they surely suffocated most of the negative feelings, but they also suffocated the interest and enthusiasm. They produced a snoozing community. They produced indifference.

And I think it’s the main reason why a mediocre game like the first EQ is still more successful (and hated and debated).

We’ll see if six month from Imperator’s release there will be someone interested. I think Mythic is overstimating its capacity to reheat the hearts. In particular if they don’t change their attitude.

It’s not the lack of information. It’s the lack of dialogue and involvement.
