Ladders and idiots

Thread to track.

I don’t think you guys understand. What I’m suggesting wouldn’t make the game any easier. Removing tedium doesn’t make the game easier, it just makes it…less tedious.

As it is right now, I’d say most of the corpse runs are three minutes or less. There is no difference between a three minute corpse run and waiting three minutes for a teleport in terms of actual, in-game penalty. None. Nada. Neither one makes the game more difficult or easier to play. You guys copy that? You guys all seem to be hung up on the idea that it would make the game easier. It wouldn’t.

Finally, this is a bit off subject, but do you guys realize that none of these MMOs are truly challenging? These are not hard games to play. You want a challenge? Join the U.S. Chess Federation and try to get your chess rating up. That’s a challenging game. MMOs are not challenging. The only degree of difficulty about them is the time they require, and I can’t believe any of you are proud of an achievement that simply requires no skill other than amassing a lot of computer time.

These games are entertainment. They are not a measuring stick of any kind of skill.

We want achievement. We don’t want to interact, we seek to climb the social and (enter x here) ladder. I wonder what happens when our culture stops judging its achivements by ladders (i.e. college and business rank, etc) and instead do what they want?

Thanks a lot to both Mark Asher (first part) and Galt (second).
